How to Draw a Cat

A cat, besides being a favorite pet, is also a well sought after subject amongst artists. Drawing a cat proportionately can be tricky. Although they vary in color, size, and poses, their fundamental structure remains constant. In fact, famous author James Thurber once wrote, 'cats sit fat and walk thin.' We simplify the task of drawing a cat by breaking down its shape into simple geometrical shapes to form a simple outline first and spruce it to perfection later.

Things you will need:

1. Pencil
2. Eraser
3. Canvass/Paper
4. Colors ( optional)
5. Paint Brush (Optional)

Easy & simple steps to draw a cartoon cat:

1. Basic Outline - The basic structure of a cat in a sitting pose will involve -
i. Head - Draw a circle for the cats head.
ii. Body - Draw another circle or oblong shape right below the small circle we drew for the cat's head.
iii. Ears - Draw two conical shapes on the either side of the cat's head. The pointed side of the cone needs to be away from the head.
iv. Legs - For the front legs, draw two elongated 'U' shaped curvy line starting from the left end of circle we made for the cat's body and ending at the right side of the circle. For the back legs, towards the lower end of the circle draw 'C' shaped lines on the either side, for its thighs.
v. We can now, fair out & darken the basic shape of the cat and erase any supporting and guiding lines.

2. Enhance Features - Outline the cat's outer shape with fuzzy lines to give it a fluffy and puffed up look.
i. Eyes - Draw two ovals for the eyes and another two smaller sized circles for its pupils.
ii. Nose - Draw a small triangle below the eyes.
iii. Mouth - Right below the nose draw a small 'W' with soft edges.
iv. Whiskers - On the either side of the cheek draw dots and then make the curvy lines of varied lengths for its whiskers.
v. Tail - Draw a curvy line starting from the lower end of the cat's body and use your creative mind to shape its twists and twirls.

3. Shading/Coloring - This step will provide your drawing with the all the needed delight and punch.
i. Ears - You can draw another set of small triangles in the ears and darken it or color it a dark grey.
ii. Nose - The nose can be colored pink or light brown in case you are using colors or otherwise darken it and make some very fine dots.
iii. Feet - The toes and toe nails of the front feet need to be outlined and shaded
iv. Whiskers - A few whiskers can be darkened. They should be kept lighter towards its end.

Since every cat is unique, you can make your exclusive marking and distinctive expressions to make it look happy and joyful.
